You Need Two Analytics Tools. Maybe Three.
GA4 for traffic data. Clarity for free heatmaps. Maybe a privacy-focused alternative. Everything else is either redundant or solving problems you don't have.
Google Analytics 4
The standard. Free, comprehensive, integrates with Search Console. Yes, the learning curve from Universal Analytics was painful. Yes, the interface is confusing. But it's free, it's powerful, and the Search Console integration is essential for SEO.
Microsoft Clarity
Free heatmaps and session recordings. No limits. Actually free, not freemium. This killed Hotjar's business model. Install Clarity, get heatmaps, understand user behavior. Pairs perfectly with GA4.
Core Analytics
Google Analytics 4
USE ITEvent-based tracking, cross-device measurement, and machine learning insights. Connect it to Search Console for organic search data. Connect it to Looker Studio for reporting. The ecosystem integration is why it wins.
Microsoft Clarity
USE ITUnlimited heatmaps, session recordings, and rage click detection. Completely free. No sampling, no session limits. Microsoft subsidizes it for Bing Ads data, but you don't have to use Bing. Just install it.
Heatmaps & Session Recording
Clarity made most of these redundant for typical use cases.
Hotjar
SITUATIONALThe original heatmap/recording tool. Good product, but hard to justify when Clarity is free. Hotjar's surveys and feedback tools are nice additions if you need them. Otherwise, Clarity does the core job.
Crazy Egg
SKIP ITEarly heatmap pioneer. Still works, but no compelling reason to choose it over Clarity. Neil Patel acquired it, which tells you where it's headed.
Mouseflow
SITUATIONALAnother heatmap/recording tool. Good funnel analysis features. If you need form analytics or complex funnel tracking, this might edge out Clarity. For most sites, overkill.
Smartlook
SITUATIONALSession recording with event tracking. Works for web and mobile apps. The mobile app support is the differentiator. For web-only, Clarity is better and free.
Privacy-Focused Analytics
For when you can't or won't use Google Analytics.
Plausible
USE ITLightweight, privacy-respecting, GDPR-compliant without cookie banners. Open source, EU-hosted option available. If you need analytics without tracking concerns, this is the cleanest option. Limited compared to GA4, but intentionally so.
Fathom
SITUATIONALSimilar to Plausible - simple, private, no cookies. Slightly more polished interface. Good reputation, bootstrapped company. Choose between Plausible and Fathom based on UI preference. Both are solid.
Matomo
SITUATIONALThe most feature-complete GA alternative. Self-hosted option means full data ownership. Complex to set up and maintain. Choose this if you need GA-level features without Google. For simpler needs, Plausible is easier.
Clicky
SKIP ITBeen around forever. Real-time focus. But the interface feels dated and there's no compelling reason to choose it over modern alternatives.
A/B Testing
Useful for conversion optimization, but rarely an SEO priority.
Optimizely
SITUATIONALEnterprise A/B testing platform. Powerful but expensive. If you're doing serious experimentation at scale, this is the industry standard. Most sites don't need this level of sophistication.
VWO
SITUATIONALMore accessible than Optimizely, still powerful. Good for mid-market companies. If you need A/B testing without enterprise pricing, this is a solid choice.
Convert
SITUATIONALPrivacy-focused A/B testing. Good for GDPR-conscious companies. Less known than VWO but solid product.
Product Analytics
For SaaS and apps. Less relevant for content-focused SEO.
Mixpanel
SITUATIONALProduct analytics focused on user journeys and retention. Great for SaaS products. Not what you need for SEO - it's for understanding product usage, not traffic sources.
Heap
SITUATIONALAuto-captures everything, lets you define events retroactively. Powerful for product teams. Overkill for most SEO use cases. Useful if you need deep funnel analysis.
Agency Reporting
Agency Analytics
SITUATIONALWhite-label reporting dashboard for agencies. Pulls from GA, GSC, social, and ads platforms. Useful if you're managing multiple clients and need unified reporting. Not needed for in-house teams.
The Analytics Stack That Actually Works
Stop overcomplicating analytics. Here's what most sites need:
- Google Analytics 4 - Traffic, conversions, Search Console integration
- Microsoft Clarity - Heatmaps and recordings (free)
- Maybe Plausible - If you need privacy-friendly public stats
That's it. The rest is either redundant, overpriced, or solving problems you don't have.
Connect GA4 to Search Console. This gives you organic search data inside GA4. Connect GA4 to Looker Studio. This gives you custom dashboards and reporting.
