The Indexing API Trick That Nukes Your Site
Google's Indexing API hack gets your pages indexed in minutes. Then it gets them deindexed in months. The math is not in your favor.
The Promise
I watched a client do this to himself. Smart guy. Ran a SaaS company, understood technology, was not the type to fall for obvious garbage. He found the Indexing API hack on Twitter, set it up in five minutes, and for about six weeks he was the happiest man in SEO. Every page indexed within the hour. Coverage report in Search Console: solid green. He sent me a screenshot with a smiley face. I sent back a thumbs up because I didn't have the heart to tell him what was coming.
Here's the pitch, for those who haven't encountered it yet. Google has an Indexing API. Built it in 2018 for job postings and livestream content. Pages with short lifecycles that need to get into search fast and out of search fast. Job goes up Monday, gets filled Friday, should be gone by Saturday. Sitemaps are too slow for that. URL Inspection tool only handles a handful of pages per day. So Google built an API.
The hack: use it for everything. Blog posts. Service pages. Product pages. E-commerce categories. Whatever you want indexed, shove it through the Indexing API and watch Google crawl it within minutes instead of days or weeks.
One API key gives you 200 URL submissions per day. There are WordPress plugins that automate the whole thing. Instant Indexing for Google, Rank Math's built-in integration. Set it up once and every new post gets pushed to Google the moment you hit publish. Five minutes of configuration. Instant indexing forever.
The internet is full of people telling you this works. They're not lying. It does work. At first.
The Setup
Here's what happens when you submit a non-job-posting URL through the Indexing API:
Google receives the request. Google crawls the page. Google notices there's no JobPosting or BroadcastEvent schema on the page. Google indexes it anyway.
This is the part that makes people lose their minds. Google's own documentation says the API is only for job postings and livestream videos. Their quickstart page, updated December 2025, still says exactly this:
Currently, the Indexing API can only be used to crawl pages with either JobPosting or BroadcastEvent embedded in a VideoObject.
And yet. You submit a blog post, it gets indexed. You submit a product page, it gets indexed. You submit your about page, it gets indexed. The documentation says one thing. The behavior says another. SEO Twitter sees the behavior and decides the documentation is wrong.
I've been doing this for twenty years and I can tell you: when Google's documentation says one thing and the behavior says another, the documentation is telling you the future. The behavior is telling you the present. Enjoy the present while it lasts.
The Data
At first, your indexing rate looks miraculous. Pages that would have taken days or weeks to show up in search results appear within minutes. Coverage report goes green across the board. Ninety-nine percent indexing rate. Every URL you submit comes back crawled and indexed, often within the hour.
Here's what the people sharing their success stories don't mention: they've been using it for two weeks. Maybe a month. The sample size is "I submitted 50 pages and they all got indexed." The timeframe is "since last Tuesday."
Nobody sharing screenshots of their incredible indexing results is sharing data from month four. There's a reason for that.
The Kill
Somewhere between month two and month four, pages start dropping.
Not slowly. Not one at a time. Whole batches. URLs that were indexed via the API start showing up as "Crawled - currently not indexed" in Search Console. Pages that ranked, that had traffic, that were doing their job, just gone. The coverage report that was solid green starts bleeding red.
My client, the happy SaaS guy? He called me on a Tuesday. Not happy anymore. Forty percent of his blog was deindexed overnight. Pages that had been ranking for months. Pages that were bringing in demo signups. Gone. And the really fun part: even after he stopped using the API, the pages didn't come back. It's been five months now. Some of them are still gone.
He's not alone. Alexander Chukovski, who runs a job board and actually tested this properly, published the graph. Traffic to a test site he'd been running through the Indexing API: normal growth, then a cliff. Never recovered. On BlackHatWorld, a forum where people are usually willing to try anything, the consensus has flipped. One user, backed up by a dozen others:
avoid indexing api. it will index 99% pages at first, and within 3 to 4 months, all pages will drop. Also, google will penalize your sites for using it for non-jobs/events related pages (in long run)
On Google's own support forums: reports of entire sites wiped from the index after sustained API abuse. Not demoted. Wiped.
The pattern is the same every time: it works, it works great, it works better than anything you've tried, and then it doesn't work and nothing does.
Why It Happens
Google won't tell you this, obviously. But it's not hard to figure out.
When you submit a URL through the Indexing API, Google's systems treat it as a job posting or livestream page. It gets crawled with that expectation. When the crawler shows up and finds no JobPosting schema, no BroadcastEvent schema, just your blog post about content marketing or whatever, two things are now true: one, the page got crawled, which is what you wanted, and two, you lied to Google's systems about what's on the page.
At small scale, Google doesn't seem to care. The API processes the request, the page gets indexed, you feel clever. At sustained scale, a couple hundred submissions across a few months, the pattern lights up in whatever quality system is monitoring this. You're systematically feeding Google false information about your pages. Google can trivially check whether your pages have the required schema. They do check. And at some point, someone or something decides that you've been doing this long enough to warrant consequences.
Based on every case I've seen, the timer is three to four months. Just long enough for you to get dependent on it. Just long enough for you to tell your boss or your client that you found this great indexing trick. Just long enough for the fall to hurt.
The whole point of using the Indexing API was to get indexed faster. The result is getting deindexed entirely. You traded weeks of waiting for months of recovery. If recovery comes at all.
The Indie Grift
There's an entire cottage industry built on this hack and I find it genuinely depressing.
Indie SaaS tools that are, functionally, a wrapper around the Indexing API with a $10-50/month price tag on top. They charge you money to do something that takes five minutes to set up for free through Google Cloud Console. Their landing pages promise "instant indexing" and "guaranteed crawling" without a word about the documented risk of getting your site nuked from the index.
IndexMeNow. IndexJump. Indexly AI. A dozen others. Some of them are run by people who genuinely believe the hack works because they've only tested it on throwaway domains they don't care about. Some of them know exactly what they're selling. All of them are selling you a gun pointed at your own site.
The WordPress plugin, Instant Indexing for Google, has this note in its description, and I'll give them credit for the honesty:
Google recommends that you use the Indexing API ONLY for Job Posting and Live Streaming websites. However, it works on any type of website and many of our users have seen great results already. Please proceed with caution.
"Please proceed with caution" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence. That's like selling someone a chainsaw with a sticky note that says "maybe don't juggle this."
What Actually Works
The boring answer. I know. You hate the boring answer. I hate the boring answer. But I've been doing this long enough to know that the boring answer is almost always the right one, and the exciting answer is almost always the one that blows up in your face three months later.
URL Inspection tool in Search Console. You can manually request indexing for individual URLs. The limit is about 10 per day. It's slow. It's manual. It works. Nobody has ever been penalized for using the URL Inspection tool as intended. That's because Google built it for exactly this purpose and they're not going to punish you for using their own tool the way they told you to use it.
Sitemaps. Submit them. Keep them current. Resubmit when you make significant changes. I know this sounds like the SEO equivalent of "eat your vegetables," but Google's documentation recommends sitemaps as the primary discovery mechanism for new content. Not exciting. Correct.
Internal linking. This is the one nobody wants to hear because it requires actual work instead of a five-minute plugin setup. If your new page is linked from pages that Google already crawls regularly, it gets discovered on the next crawl cycle. New blog post linked from your homepage, your blog index, two or three related posts. Google finds it within the normal cadence. No API. No hack. Just architecture.
IndexNow. This is the legitimate version of what the Indexing API hack promises. Microsoft built it, Bing and Yandex support it, and it does exactly what you want: tells search engines "I published something new, come look at it." Google doesn't officially support IndexNow yet, but there are reports they watch the submissions. Either way, it works for Bing with zero risk.
304 response codes. For pages that haven't changed, return 304 Not Modified instead of 200 OK. This tells crawlers the page hasn't changed, which frees up crawl budget for discovering your new stuff instead of re-downloading pages you didn't touch. Almost nobody does this. It works.
None of these will get your page indexed in five minutes. All of them will get your page indexed without nuking your site. That seems like a reasonable trade to me but what do I know, I'm just the guy who has to fix it when the other thing goes wrong.
The Math
URL Inspection tool: 10 manual submissions per day, zero risk, pages typically indexed within 24 to 72 hours.
Indexing API hack: 200 automated submissions per day, pages indexed within minutes, site potentially deindexed within three to four months.
The hack is 20x faster in the short term. In the medium term, it's infinitely slower, because zero is slower than any positive number, and zero is what your traffic becomes when Google pulls the plug.
A page that takes three days to get indexed through boring legitimate means and then ranks for years is worth infinitely more than a page that gets indexed in three minutes and disappears in three months. This is not complicated math. People get it wrong anyway because the three-minute number feels good and the three-day number feels bad and we are, as a species, catastrophically bad at weighing short-term gratification against medium-term consequences. I include myself in this. I once ate an entire bag of gummy bears on a flight to London because they were free and I am weak.
The Actual Hack
Here's the real hack, the one nobody talks about because it's not a hack at all and therefore not interesting at conferences: build a site that Google wants to crawl.
If your crawl budget is good, if Google's systems have decided your site is worth regular visits, new pages get discovered on their own within hours. Not because of an API. Because Google's crawler is already there, regularly, because it trusts your site and expects to find something worth indexing when it shows up.
Sites with strong internal linking, fast load times, clean technical foundations, and consistent publishing cadences don't have indexing problems. The people desperate enough to abuse the Indexing API are usually the same people who haven't done any of that work. They're looking for a shortcut around the shortcut around the actual thing they should be doing.
The Indexing API hack treats a symptom. The symptom is slow indexing. The cause is a site that Google doesn't prioritize. Fixing the symptom while ignoring the cause is how you end up deindexed at 2am, writing a Slack message to your client that starts with "so there's been a development" and ends with your retainer being reconsidered.
The fence is always there. The shortcut always looks climbable. The landing is always worse than you think.
